Shelf life of Thinset....????

Anybody know or have experience with using old thinset...???

I have 1/2 bag of Custom Building Products "Versabond" (their latex/polymer added thinset).

It is probably several or more years old, has been opened, but not exposed to moisture and appears fine.

I called Custom, and their technical assistant, said it had a 15 month shelf life but could not tell me why it deteriorates when it appears just fine.

My application is porceline flooring tile over concrete. I just ran short by very little (maybe 5-10 lbs) of finishing our laundry room using new product and have 1/3 bag of old Versabond.

Not that the stuff is expensive, but Lowes is 40 miles away, and I would rather use the old stuff.... if it's viable. (I guess you could say I was not confident in Custom Buildings representation.)

As always, Thanks for any help/experience/knowledge.

JAZZ... you must know....

Yes....I do.

The general industry recommendation for cementitious products is that it shouldn't be used if it's older than 12-24 months from the day it was manufactured, not bought. Some manufacturers say 12mo. some longer. In addition, it also must have been stored in a conditioned space for the entire time, off the floor and not be opened. So not opened, not stored in your basement near an exterior wall or on the floor, and definitely not in the garage even if you lived in the Caribbean, where it's 85 deg. 360 days a year.

Just because it may still be powdery and not in chucks doesn't mean it's good. That bag belongs at the curb next garbage day.

Jazz.... Thanks.... You I believe....... (I guess the kid at Custom was correct.)

I guess as a powder in a bag it seems sort of inert... but I guess not.... wonder if the two 5" cut tiles behind the refer when I set it back to cabinet depth are still stuck down... have to look sometime...
