Replace 10"x3" Piece of Bathroom Subfloor

Unfortunately I do not have any pictures to show.

We bought a house recently from within the family, and we are replacing the bathroom floor tile this weekend. We already knew a small section of the subfloor needed replacing (tile was missing).

The section abuts the tub (metal, solid wall to wall and from the floor up, and was where wet towels were often left. It also abuts part of the wall.

Looking up from the basement the floor looks fine, but this one section from the top is rotted.

Can I simply "chisel" / cut it square and screw down a piece of plywood in that section and tile over?

Thanks for the help

Really would be best to post that picture for better reply's.
No it's not chiseled out it's cut out.
Enough needs to be removed so the new piece will be sitting on a floor joist.
Needs to be a nice square cut.
Is this old tile just attached to the plywood?
Look around the room, is the grout all cracking?
