Reinforcing floor joists not on edge

I have an old house built in 1925. The floor joists are not only spaced more than 24 inches apart, they are laid on face (i.e., not on edge). Is there a way to reinforce the floor joists? Can you sister these kinds of floor joists or bridge them? I want to put down ceramic tile, but am worried the floor joists are not strong enough to hold the weight.

No Way. You need to post a pic, because your floor would look like a cereal bowl if what you are saying is true

Pics would be nice. But what I think you are saying that if it's a 2x8 then the floor is sitting in the 8" face. The weight bearing capacity of a piece of wood is a fraction of the load capacity on edge. How wavy are your floors now? In any event, the 24 inch on center probably prohibits you from ceramic tile and the current layout of the joists certainly does. I would choose another flirting material or complete rebuild this floor properly. However the joist has to sit on the sill/foundation and that is going to be an issue.
