Refinishing Maple Parquet ?

Hello - I'm considering refinishing a parquet floor - not sure whether anyone has any thoughts on that? The question I have is regarding the type of wood. The flooring person I spoke with identified the parquet as Maple which he believes is no longer made. I do not doubt that it's Maple wood, but would like to be certain as he would need to create a few pieces to repair some damage. Any thoughts on how to identify the type of wood? It's definitely light, but they are small pieces - so not sure whether Oak would weigh more.

Thanks in advance

Oak and Maple smell different.

Don't ask me to describe them.

You just have to be acquainted with them to know .

Maybe a local Wood Shop teacher can identify it for you, and maybe even demonstrate for you with a sample from his stash.

Re: Refinishing Maple Parquet ?

I actually split wood for my stove - so I definitely know the smell of Oak and Maple, but this wood floor has got to be from 1960's, and to me, has no odor. Maybe somebody who is trained might be able to tell, but there isn't any strong odor of either wood. Thanks for the reply

Try hitting it with some sandpaper, the smell will come back. It should anyway.

Re: Refinishing Maple Parquet ?

I believe we can safely say it isn't oak because of the lack of open grain.

I snipped a small section of your pic #1 for show and tell. I'm thinking this piece is what's referred to as Tiger Maple. Someone please correct me if I'm incorrect.

Thanks Jim
That was a family effort in 2009 at our daughter and son inlaws house. Called it the floor party. IIR there was around a thousand of those tiles he took up and we transported outdoors to sand and scrape wax. He purchased a new drum sander and between it, a couple of random orbits, putty knives, scrapers etc. we finally got them cleaned to his satisfaction. Wax build up of 40 years in the crannies edges isn't much fun. He would inspect after he got off work and kept the reject stack looking healthy but we prevailed.

When finished yours will look great also.

I think you are right. That piece kind of stood out to me as well. Tiger maple, or curly maple, is not a particular variety of maple but a form of grain display like a burl or birdseye that sometimes shows up in any kind of maple.
