Yes it is. It's fine if you come across someone who lets you come over, but for a contractor to give you info about a client is another matter, unless they volunteer.

Anyway what will you learn? I doubt he'd give you a name/number or take you to see a job that wasn't very happy. I guarantee EVERY referral will be a positive one. Some will be friends or relatives.

You're right. I've found no contractor willing to allow me to see their flooring work in person except one who may show me the floor in their new construction site. I'll skip this step during the hiring process.
