We are considering buying a little vacation cabin which is, to put it mildly, very funky (but in an awesome location and the least expensive 3 bdrm home in the resort by far). It is a round-house with a sunken "conversation pit" in the middle of the living room. Without it, the living space would be pretty roomy. Q: what would be the best way to raise the pit to get a level floor, do you just frame it out and put in sub-floor before laying carpet? Any ideas about other issues we'd run into -- raising the fireplace is another issue I don't know how to tackle. Sink would need to go, crazy right next to the fireplace. Any other design thoughts, we are newbies here. At this point, just trying to figure out if we should consider this crazy place or pass to something more conventional (though oddly enough this house has a nice feel to it). Pictures here -- http://www.mtresort.com/7squ/ (sorry, it's a slideshow and I can't figure out how to attach individual shots).
Also wondering if anyone has good suggestions for creative flooring that is cozy, durable and inexpensive-- this is an outdoorsy place and will withstand a lot of abuse -- little kids, snowboards, wet swimsuits, pets, etc. Doesn't need to be fancy.
