patch joints on new subfloor under thick vinyl tile?

Hi all..

First time doing any vinyl tile.. Ive got ~50 sq feet to lay in my bathroom.. fairly thick and stiff (1/8-3/16?) 2' x 1' glue down vinyl tiles..

I was planning on screwing down some good one side 1/4" plywood and expect to have one joint in it, probably 2.5-3' long, out of the main traffic path..

The only floor leveller I can find in a couple local supply stores is a big bag of unmixed for ~$40, so Im not crazy about the idea that Ive seen in a couple web-writeups about having to patch and feather that one joint..

As long as I keep my joints tight, can I get away with not patching the joint?

thanks,

brett

Is the 1/4" ply rated for underlayment?

I honestly couldnt say.. As it was going down on top of an older beat up ply floor, i wasnt so worried about increasing rigidity but more making a smooth surface.. I could easily step it up to 1/2" if thats typical?

I wouldn't screw the underlayment down. Screws will make it pucker, As far as the joint, I always patch them, but some guys don't. Seems to work out OK either way.

My question about being rated for underlayment has nothing to do with rigidity.I f using regular 1/4" luan or something not rated for underlayment the laminations could fail or there may be voids in the sheets.
