Original flooring Questions

Got around to pulling 1975 vintage dishwasher out of its hole and saw this. Vintage 1970s vinyl. The dishwasher and the sink next to it had leaked for a while many years ago. I had to cut the back leveling foot off as it had sunk into the rotten osb. Well my question is the vinyl seems to be glued to a hard plastic layer which in turn is glued to the osb. Eventually i will redo the flooring in the entire kitchen so not being a flooring expert what was that plastic layer and how best to patch that small area for now? House is on crawl space with 16" joists and 2x10 diagonal. There is newer vinyl over the vintage vinyl on the rest of the floor.

Re: Original flooring Questions

Sadly that is not OSB, but particleboard, and should be removed before you contemplate re flooring the area. It swells pretty badly, as you know. The best way to do it is with a "kick" saw around the perimeter, chasing it with a multimaster in the inside corners. Once removed, you can assess what you have for subfooring and add the appropriate layers to accommodate the flooring you plan on using.

Re: Original flooring Questions

Particleboard ugghh. Yes it has swelled and produced waves in the flooring. I was thinking of pulling the cabinets up and redoing ALL the flooring but they appear to be built on sight. And that would be a lot of work.

Re: Original flooring Questions

They were built as a unit not like boxes today. they may come out. Look for screws in the back and thru the kick in front. Sometimes there is a thin layer on the kick that went in last and the screws will be behind it.
