I meant the plywood seems cheaper than Ditra.
I still don't get it. Why compare plywood with Ditra?

I saw that membrane at Menards, I kinda giggled at it.

Ditra over heat is good too. You're supposed to pour SLC over the heat mat to embed it and make the floor flat, then install Ditra. Or, have you checked out Ditra-Heat? Fantastic. http://www.schluter.com/ditra-heat.aspx

I can purchase Ditra online and have it shipped to me.
Yup, I hear Nebraska is a fairly civilized place and there's deliveries made most every day.

Funny! Yeah the Ditra Heat looks nice, but it is also a lot pricier. :P

So if I use 3/8" Plywood for vinyl...I can come back and install tile over it - or Ditra over it to be extra sure and still have a thin profile.

If I want to have heated tile using a product like this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/SunTouch-...630R/100027475 it looks like I just have to prepare for the additional step of a self leveling underlaying cement before the tile thin set.

No, I didn't say you should install tile direct over the plywood.

You need to study all the directions of the warming system you wanna use. If you go with SLC you'll need to install metal lath and the SLC will end up being ⅜- ½" thick, If they recommend thinset mortar, you'll have to go back and float the areas where there is no warming mat. Is Ditra Heat sounding better now?

I think the best option I have is to install 1/4" Ply Substrate and install vinyl in the three locations I want tile later. When that day comes, could I then install 3/8 Ply atop the 1/4" substrate or should I just tear up the 1/4" and use a new single layer solid tile substrate before tile mortar?
