multi-level flooring

My kitchen (laminate) flooring is a different height than my hallway (carpet going to laminate) by 2”. There used to be a shim for a ramp to make up the height difference which was fine for carpet. I am wanting to replace the carpet with laminate and i don’t think it would work without tearing the laminate. I would like to keep it as a small step but need a way to stop my kitchen floor from tearing up from being stepped on. I am also ok with a ramp system but not sure how to go about either. Any help is appreciated.
