I need some opinions (and some answers) on molding

Happy Friday everyone, I have some basic molding questions I was hoping to get some help with. Thank you in advance for any assistance, molding is a whole new facet to home renovation for me.

1. What is the proper gauge and length of nail for nailing 4 inch A smoldering onto the wall?
2. The walls are plaster, is molding typically nailed only to studs?
3. Do I use the same gauge and length of nail for nailing shoe molding and cove molding?

I want to build up the look of my oak stairs by utilizing oak shoe molding at the base of each step and potentially some quarter round under each step (see example photo) Does anyone have opinions on this or potentially a better way to 'build out' the steps?

Dining room/kitchen new marble floor:

I installed a marble floor that spans the kitchen and dining room replace the original floors. I had to remove the original molding in the dining room in order to rebuild floor.

Do I use the same layout That I would in the wood floor environment? (4 inch plank, Cove, and shoe)

How do I terminate the molding at the entryway? I was thinking of using a piece of QR but I was wondering if there was a better way. Photograph:

Molding around ventilation returns:

How do I deal with molding that runs into my forced air ventilation returns?

I am very sorry for all the questions but as I said I am totally new to molding and I wanted to make sure to get some opinions from experienced people before I tackle it myself for the first time.
