How to prolong the life of carpet

What's the best way to keep my carpets in the best shape possible to avoid replacing them earlier? With kids, what is the average number of years that people replace their new carpets?

I steam clean the carpets every year. I also vacuum every week. Should I be vacuuming more than every week in certain areas? I have a Dyson cordless that I use to vacuum every 2-3 days in high traffic areas, but I know the Dyson cordless doesn't have the same suction power as the corded ones. Just trying to keep the dirt out of the carpet since dirt embedded will shred the carpet fibers.

Any particular hints or products that will help me keep my carpets lasting longer with 2 toddlers running around the house and spilling things everywhere? The main goal is to prolong the life of the carpets, so I don't have to replace carpets in the house which I hear is an expensive process!
