How important thickness of carpet pad?

I've read that for normal carpet, 1/2 inch thick padding is too much, it allows the carpet to break down sooner, that 7/16 or less is much better.
How important is this? Is thinner padding more expensive? And are there pros and cons, like 1/2 padding makes carpet softer?

Its not important at all if you dont care about your carpets life span. Get the best pad you can afford you will be glad you did.

Pounds of density is more important than thickness. I would suggest 8 lb.
