How to fix bad transition to sunken room

All,

The previous owners of my house put an addition on the house. It's about an 8" step down into the new room. Where once there was a sliding patio door, there is now a 5ft. wide opening into the new room. They took the easy way out, and covered the area with 9" wide sheets of metal (see picture). The hardwood floor extends mostly under the metal, with a cut-out from an old HVAC floor vent. I was able to lift the metal enough to get a look under, and the wood doesn't look great. I'm trying to figure out how to fix this area. One thought was to carpet it like a stair. I would get matching gray carpet, come up and over the transition, and out far enough into the hardwood room to cover the metal. Would that look too odd? Anyone ever see anything like this? Any advice or opinions?

Google "landing tread", I'd be removing that metal and installing one the full length of the opening.
