how to cut back existing carpet

I'd like to cut back some existing carpet to expand a built in book shelf (well, tear it down and rebuild it slightly bigger)

How do I make sure the carpet doesn't go sliding everywhere? Can I just put down staples in the carpet near where I want to bring out the book shelf to? Is there anything special I need to do with the type of staples?

Why not just set the bottom panel of the bookshelf on top of the carpet? Otherwise I would suggest using a matching threshold trim piece.

I'd install the shelf right on the carpet
