Hardwood refinishing

Before we purchased our home, it had a water leak that bowed the hardwood floor near the fridge. The previous owner fixed the leak and a contractor half-assed fixed the floor. The color is pretty good but it is very dull. Do hardwoods typically need some sort of poly or clear finish? Can I just apply this to the section I need in hopes of blending it? I don't want to refinish an entire floor (it's a lot of sq footage) and we have dogs and a child, it'll only get beat up at some point. We just want it to be better. Any suggestions? I'll see if I can't get a picture but it may be hard to get it to show up. Thanks.

Yes, should at least be protected with multiple coats of polyurethane.

Blending poly is not easy but can be done by those with some skill.
