Going from carpet to hardwood, is my subfloor sufficient?

Hi,
I'm planning on removing some carpet and replacing it with 3/4" hardwood flooring. The manual says the minimum subfloor thickness should be 5/8", but I only have 1/2" plywood under the carpet. The floor joists are 24" OC. Can I get away with installing the hardwood as is, assuming the subfloor is solid, or is this not enough support long term (and what should I do in this case?)?

I have put down hardwoods in my houses. I roll out 30 lb tar paper and nail them down. I haven't had any issues with any of my floors in 20 years. I also make sure to let them acclimate for 2-3 weeks in the room they will be in as well.

The instructions with my flooring mentioned Aquabar B as an option, so I grabbed a roll of that stuff (I assume it's similar to the felt paper). So do you think the thinner 1/2" plywood can support the wood flooring with no problems?

I do believe you would be fine without it but if need be, you could add a qtr inch plywood but I would definitely glue and screw it down good to prevent squeaking for sure. I have always only used tar paper. The stuff you are referring to is usually used as a sound dampener. I'm sure some others will come along soon and give theri input as well. I have laid tons of feet of solid oak hardwood and bamboo with no problems using my method though.

I would think the call for 5/8" minimum likely assumed 16" OC structure. I would not install without calling the manufacturer and getting their sign-off.

Additionally, I would not put 1/4" plywood anywhere in the sandwich. I would either add another 1/2" or rip out what's there to install 3/4" if that suffices.

Call the manufacturer? Didn't think of that, thanks!
