Correct. Use a 1/4"X1/4"X1/4" notched trowel and spread the thinset all in one direction. Set a board in the thinset, walk-it-in a little, and immediately screw it into place.

Before spreading thinset for the next board, scrape away any thinset that has purged out from under the board placed last. Don't allow any four-way intersections. Stagger seams every chance you get.
