Face-nailing bamboo flooring.

I am looking at putting some bamboo flooring up in a loft area. I had already used some of this flooring in another loft that was so small it was just for storage. This lof it bigger and may be used to put a desk or a bed and will therefore be seen. I used a 18ga nailer stapler to install the floor last time but this time I want to do a better install as I have the recommended floor nailer and cleats for this flooring.

This flooring nailer won't allow me to get to the first few rows, so I will need to face nail the first 2 rows or so. I don't like the results of my 18ga nailer because it does staples also it makes a larger indentation in the face than a nailer only would do.

Should I rent a nailer just for the first few rows or drill, nail and set? If I do it by hand what kind of nails should I use for 5/8 flooring into 3/4 ply subfloor?

The hardwood floors I have laid over the years, I just drilled the tongues and nailed/set the first few runs from the wall. Extra effort, but it is worth it. I used #6 finish nails. JMO

As stated, Drill the tongue, at an angle, and whatever finish nail that is needed to fill the hole diameter, without splitting the wood, nailset to finish it and when you have enough room , switch to the power nailer.

I've used my 16 gauge nailer to face nail oak before and once the nail holes are filled with the appropriate colored putty - they disappear. I've never had any dealings with bamboo flooring.

Re: Face-nailing bamboo flooring.

I use my 16 ga finish nailer thru the tongue to start my bamboo flooring. Only face nailed the first plank next to the wall and the base shoe covered it.

Re: Face-nailing bamboo flooring.

I used 1-1/2" finishing nails thru the tongues as mentioned above.
Nail set and done.
