Crack in wood flooring

We are refinishing our hardwood flooring on our stairway. The one step has a pretty large crack and its splintered. We found Elmers Damaged wood repair kit at lowes and were wondering if it would work. We'd like to not have to replace the wood because the house was built in 1895 and we don't believe we'd be able to match any newer wood to the other steps.

Any fillers you try to use are going to stick out like a sore thumb.
A tread that wide now would be made from laminated strips of wood not one piece like that one to avoid the cupping and splitting.

It looks like the tread is removable, since it looks like you have nails or screws fastening it to the riser. Remove it, fasten a piece of 2x reinforcing behind/below. If you can't remove, maybe you can just access it from below the stairs?

Maybe a little sanding will help even the crack out; hard to tell from just pics.
