Black Mastic - Best Options if Don't Want to Remove
Hi. I'm new to DIYChat and am hoping someone can help. My sister and her husband removed some 9x9 tiles in their basement, not realizing they were asbestos tiles. They are now left with a 10 x 13 room with black mastic. It is pretty smooth and level. I read the post about using BEAN-E-DOO product to remove; however, are there safe options if you don't want to remove the mastic? For example, can you apply thinset and cement board and put flooring over that, or will the thinset not stick to the mastic? Can you cover with a vapor barrier and put flooring over that? Any options anyone can recommend would be really appreciated! Thanks!

Vinyl plank flooring might be an option. Thinset will not adhere well to the Black mastic. I've pulled ceramic tile from floors with mastic and they pop right off with little effort. The Bean-E-doo isn't really that difficult to do, and there isn't really any danger of asbestos while using it.
