Engineered over laminate maybe. Plywood base is much better than mdf.
The engineered seems to have a thicker layer of solid wood. Some of the laminates I've seen look like a layer of MACtac.

Either one over solid, only price is a benefit.
Also, solid shouldn't be used in the basement.
