Basement stairs paint color advice

Hey guys I need your advice. Somebody told me that there's an option to get the same pattern paint as the flooring (Lumbar liquidators 5mm fieldstone vinyl) or another option is paint it the same color as the walls ( Sherwin Williams superpaint Northstar on the walls)

What's in trend these days? I am thinking of painting grey and white like the attached pic. I am open to other ideas too. Is there anything else I should put on the stairs to protect it from damage.

How much does it cost to replace a step because one stair needs some work and I might have to replace it

Thank you!

Personally I'd clean them up and stain them [or not] and apply 3 coats of poly. Poly won't show wear as soon as paint does. As far as paint colors - most any color that floats your boat is fine.

I fixed up a house to sell and stairs in picture were fully carpeted including stringers. I cladded inside and outside of stringer with 1/4” G1S plywood. Capped top of stringers with MDF custom cut. Painted those same as wall and risers have same laminate as floor. Picked up a roll end of carpet for 20 bucks.

For safety, I suggest that you paint the treads a Bright YELLOW, that makes them easily seen, in almost any light.

But practicality says that no one will like that, so the alternating grey / white pattern is fairly safe.

Never use carpeting on stairs, it wears easily, then creates a trip hazard, and someone gets injured.

Any color scheme that differentiates the treads from the risers will be safe enough. POs of our current house had gold-colored metal strips put on the edge of each tread into the basement, so not only is there a visual differentiator, there's a tactile one too—and sometimes auditory, when you step on a strip and it goes clank.

So first you stain it with whatever color(satin or semi gloss? railing is semi gloss) and then apply oil based polyurethane on top?

Basement stairs in my house have carpet tile glued and aluminium nosing nailed onto treads.

The stain won't have a sheen to speak of and needs poly applied over it to protect the stain from wearing away or attracting dirt/grime. The 3 most common sheens of poly are satin, semi-gloss and gloss.

I used SW super paint satin on walls so when I asked the guy about stairs yesterday he said I can use the same paint on the stairs. Oil based or water based poly? (if oil, won't that make it slippery?) Thank you

You can always get them to add a little sand to the mix, to add traction.

As for edge protection (nosings), only if you worry about the edge wearing off first, which it will, because people slide their feet, on and off of treads.

No but It just finishes the edge better and the edge doesn’t blend in.

Re: Basement stairs paint color advice

The problem with adding sand to paint is it tends to wear off on the high traffic areas - where you need it the most. I like SuperPaint but no way would I use it on a floor/steps.
