Question

24" joist spacing and nail-down solid hardwood flooring

Bonus room has 24" joist spacing with 23/32 OSB.

Product to be used is nail-down solid hardwood flooring.

Please advise on the additional layer of plywood's thickness, grade and nail size.

I think it would be a good idea if you told us the brand and specific item of the hardwood you're installing.

What size are the joist? 23/64 osb with joists at 24" is not a good foundation for a solid wood floor. I would lay 1/2" Advantec perpendicular to the osb stagerring the seams depending on your joist size.

We'll wait for the info about the joists. You've been asked so we can confirm the deflection of the framing. However, this house sounds fairly modern, so I'll bet the framing meets min. joists deflection of L360, but, we'll see.

As already stated, 23/32 OSB does not meet manufacturer's min. spec over 24" oc framing. You need to add a layer of min. ⅜" approved underlayment grade ply or OSB. Use thicker than ⅜" if it doesn't mess up anything.

The new underlayment should always be oriented perpendicular to the joists, NOT the subfloor. Maybe mako1 misspoke above? Ply and OSB is stiffest with the grain going across the joists.

Fasteners? Depends on the thickness of the new underlayment. For ⅜" ply/OSB, I'd use flooring staples if I had the right tool. Ring shank underlayment nails for full " underlayment.

Re: 24" joist spacing and nail-down solid hardwood flooring

Jazzman caught me again.Thank you. I should have said perpendicular to the joist. This heat here has been a killer the last couple weeks and I've been working outside for most of it. .The heat and my age is not a good mix.
Hope your all doing better than we are here in central IL but I doubt that's the case.Seams to be unbearable most places now.

Why not tell us about your joists or trusses?

Re: 24" joist spacing and nail-down solid hardwood flooring

Great enochian, we still don't know any more than before.

We gotta know the span of the joists and their species and grade. Otherwise all we can do is to assume everyone did their job when the house was built.

A. 1 " ring shank/underlayment.

B. 15.5 gauge staples or 16 gauge cleats 1-1/2 to 2

Have you read the instructions? There many other things you need to check including moisture levels and flatness of the subfloor.

10 feet long. Have no idea about species or grade.

I have an issue with this weird gap in floor perimeter that comes forward past the trim:
