Sis Wanted a Finial

The little hand held school bell our late Mother used in the early 1900s, when she taught, has been missing the finial for years and Sis wanted to know if I could make one for 2 L of pure maple syrup. It only took a split second to answer that bargain deal question. I love that stuff.

But there was a problem. The little Atlas lathe I was storing for a nephew left my property about 20 years ago for a new home but SeniorSitizen ( AKA Jack of all trades ) came up with the solution he had never tried before.

With half inch brass stock chucked in the drill press and a good Makita Rt. angle grinder it can be roughed out in just a few minutes. Finishing takes a little longer, maybe 45 min., with files, emery tape and things like that but all went very well.

Wow, I knew that a Shopsmith could be turned into a vertical lathe, never thought of a regular drill press being able to do it though.

Excellent innovation for an old fellow SENIOR SITIZEN .

Shows that you ain't ready to be pushed aside yet.

Finished Finial looks great.

Great idea!

Now we need a pic with it attached to the bell.

The bell is a few hundred miles away but the plan is to have a bell - finial wedding around the end of this month. Date not final. Picture should follow.

I've been informed that Bell and Finial are registered at Ace Hardware. ROTF

As promised, there was a Bell-Finial wedding and all present agreed the couple looked mighty hansom compared to the bell only with an 8-32 machine screw protruding from the top of the handle with a hex nut and flat washer.

The handle isn't new but the wooden one I made 50 some years ago. My late Mother and Sis cared for it well.

Thank you for attending.

Wow! That is really nice work. Very skilled work. I was wondering what it was going to be used for. Now I see.

NICE

May they co-exist together happily for another century or two.

Fine marriage that you arranged there.
