Re: Cathedral ceiling for the master bedroom

Thank you!
Itís could be done only by using your own time and sweat. I canít even imagine how to price something like that. So far it took me over three month working alone every weekends. I knew itís going to be a vary labor intensive when I design this thing, but Iím not sure if Iím going to do this ever again

Re: Cathedral ceiling for the master bedroom

When I first started reading your thread I missed that it was a completed project and started my notes with the question, wouldn't it be easier to remove that section of the roof and install purpose built trusses? Then I realized it was a done deal so kept my mouth shut. Now at the end I hear you questioning the time required so I'll ask, Would it have been easier to remove and rebuild that area??

Note, I think it looks fantastic and sometimes people just like climbing mountains when all there is at the top is a view that few will ever see.

Re: Cathedral ceiling for the master bedroom

Hi, Bud

You are correct, something like this is easier to accomplish with a conventional roof framing, however to remove the portion of roof and engineering trusses is unfeasible in this case. The 2 story building is not designed for the long ceiling joist span at 2nd floor level, the bearing walls and point load posts needs to be constructed which would involve the whole house rebuild. These particular trusses carries the roof over two adjourning rooms and master bathroom.

The idea of this project is to demonstrate that interesting ceiling could be done even in the house with engineering truss roof construction.

Tiles installation continue. In order to reduce tile cracking I taped the face of tile with heavy-duty stucco tape.

All tiles installed. Edges have been trimmed and polished. Luckily, the marble tile are easy to cut and grind. There is lot of dust, thoughÖ

I installed the recessed ethanol fireplace. The manufacturer's specs was incorrect!! I had to modify the finished opening on the fly to adjust depth for the proper bracket placement.

Next is the intallation of "no gap" TV bracket and receiver.
This TV features specially designed custom TV frame and displays artwork! It looks like beautiful picture frame hanged on the wall.

Re: Cathedral ceiling for the master bedroom

Just a question and it may have been addressed, sorry, but locating the flat screen directly above the fireplace is guaranteed to provide some hot pictures, pun intended.

I took some infrared images of the wall temperatures above a standard baseboard hot water radiator and that heat hugs the wall as it is pushed up. In terms of electronics, they don't like heat.

Any thoughts?

I am not sure the brand but we found it in one set of instructions
The bottom of the mantel is 14" above the fireplace and should be 10" deep.
I think that would be less for a TV mounted flat to the wall.

Re: Cathedral ceiling for the master bedroom

Agreed, a mantel would help slightly but I don't see one here and I don't think the op would like a 10" deflector. With all of the posts we see where people like that location I'm surprised the mfgs aren't providing more guidance. Of course that might affect sales so I don't expect it anytime soon.

Re: Cathedral ceiling for the master bedroom

I completely agree that mounting tv directly above the conventional gas/ wood fireplace is not a good idea. However the fireplace we have installed just a decorative ambiance fireplace. We tested this fireplace before we mounted tv above. Even after an hour of continuous burning the stone tiles above the fireplace are cold to touch. The metal heavy duty box did a good job to deflect heat toward the room.
