Strange Grilling Accident

Although a Bleve is often associated with a flammable liquid rapidly expanding causing a explosion, this accident seemed more like a gas only explosion in the form of a Bleve.

My daughter inlaw called asking if I knew what might have caused her grill to behave the way it did causing her arm to be burned ( 1st degree ) and her hair being singed from a ball of fire blowing out when the grill lid was opened .

The grill pictured was being used to grill chicken that had a couple Tbl. spoons of olive oil applied and using Kingsford charcoal. Grill was hot and ready and meat put on the grill. A few minutes later she went back out to check on it and when she opened the lid fire blew out burning her arm and slightly singing her hair.
The only caveat I can think of was she had not opened the top vents although the bottom vents were open and there was a gas build up from something and opening the lid gave the hidden culprit the oxygen needed for a Bleve type explosion. We have the exact same grill and I've done this very same thing hundreds of times without incident.

Anyone ever experience similar? I hope not.

Re: Strange Grilling Accident

A couple of reasons come to mind. Perhaps she opened the lid to fast causing a strong updraft of air from the bottom vents causing a flare-up.

Another possibility is that coincidentally at the moment she raised the lid fat from the chicken dropped into the coals causing the flare-up.

Re: Strange Grilling Accident

I have a green egg and use it a lot. If you open the lid fast at times the flame will flare out all the way up your arm. If you lift lid and allow some air to get in there it will not flare out at all. The key is to not lift lid fast when you have high heat. Not a gas grill but same principle. And that flare up is violent.

Re: Strange Grilling Accident

That wasn't a BLEVE.

Just a guess as I have no experience with this grill.
Oil heated up and when lid was opened the oxygen level was raised and the oil flashed.
