No longer able to turn off fan or light for vent hood

Hello. I have an issue that I would very much appreciate some help with. I overturned the knobs for both the fan and the light of my vent hood and they stayed on until they died. The problem is that the vent hood I have is rather old and I'm not sure if it's possible to repair myself or if I will likely have to just get a new one. I have turned off the power to it, but it does not seem to be an easy task to replace the knobs and the fan motor. I know very little of electrical except to turn it off from the breaker box if I am to work on it, which I have. I have attached images of the inside of the panel with the wires and where the knobs are. It doesn't seem possible to unscrew the fan and light parts from the outside or the inside. It's a Nutone Scoville Mercury vent hood. The light still works, as I put in a new bulb and it comes on fine. But I want to be able to turn it off and not let it stay on until it burns out. Not sure how I let the knob get overturned, but that seems to be why I can no longer turn the light or fan off.

The black round thing in the top picture? That's the socket for the light bulb. In the bottom picture if you look in the far back part of the panel with 2 "sockets" - they are the knob selector switch parts (left is light and right is the fan).

How long did that take?? If the motor has died, it appears you have a switch problem and a replacement hood is in order. Luckily they aren't that expensive. I'd change it out.

There are lots of things wrong with it now. This suggests you should replace it rather than repair it.

1. Caked up with grease.
2. Fan motor has failed.
3. Switch has failed.
4. (maybe more?)

Although I myself might consider at least briefly the idea of repairing it, having to clean it quickly turns my opinion towards replacing it.

Unless you're flat broke, replace it. Under $50 at Big Orange.
