Maytag MFI2569 Fridge dead?!

Came back from vacation and found the 9 year old fridge stone dead and everything melted.
Yesterday morning the display flashed occasionally. As the day went on, it flashed more often and occasionally stayed on a couple seconds. When it stayed on longer, the compressor would go for a couple seconds. Then longer, and now it has been working normally for 24 hours.

Any idea what is going on, and if it can be saved?

My wife doesn't care; she points out the the door seals are falling apart and something else is likely to break any day. She just wants a new one, with fingerprint proof stainless.

Just a thought, but did you pull the refrigerator out, or look under it. From what you describe, it could be that a piece of paper or a toy, etc. could beasily under the refrigerator, and preventing the compressor fan from spinning.

No, I didn't pull it out; I hate messing with the copper water feed.
But that wouldn't cause the display to be out, and then flashing; would it?. I assumed that the problem was in the electronics rather than the mechanics; but I don't know much about refrigerators.

I don't know much either. You can still get a look by opening the door, pulling off the toe kick, and using a flashlight, look for some obstruction.

It seems to me that if the compressor had gone bad, it wouldn't be working now.

You could also try going to repairclinic.com. Enter your model number, and they have videos on how to diagnose.

The solution looks straight forward to me.
If the wife wants it changed, work or doesn't work, CHANGE IT!

Would you rather change the wife?

could be a controls problem - would need to see a schematic to tell you were to start.

compressors rarely fail.

if the compressor is good and the unit isn't leaking refrigerant, fix it.
