Kenmore refrigerator not cold

Hello ,
My 19 year old top freezer refrigerator has been running warm, then cold.
I cleaned all the coils and there was ice built up on freezer bottom.
The defrost works, the drain hole was just iced up and couldn't drain.
Next day thermostat down to 39.
But i had to keep temperature knob at coldest setting.

Fan in freezer seems slow, unless it always runs like that.
Compressor fan working.
There's Freon as the coils get very cold.

Seems to run alot.

I just changed the cold control in fridge and will see how it is in morning .

Any thoughts?

Re: Kenmore refrigerator not cold

Not sure if changing the cold control worked.
It was running this morning at 41 degrees.
i turned it off, waited a few minutes , then turned it on, and i did hear a click , then the fan started up.

Re: Kenmore refrigerator not cold

My ~2001 Kenmore stopped cooling -- The fan was running, and I'd hear clicks, but would not cool. Occasionally I'd notice that the fan got slower sounding w/ the click.

The problem turned out to be the compressor start relay.
Apparently these relays are notorious for failing and becoming intermittent.

Replacement was extremely simple, and the cost for a genuine Whirlpool replacement was only $40.

If you remove your relay, shake it in your hand, and hear things rattling then the relay is bad -- mine was so bad that little bits of metal popped out when I shook it.

Since replacing the relay the fridge has been working flawlessly -- now as my garage beer fridge because we purchased a replacement because the old fridge also had failed water/ice maker.

Thanks,
The relay is fine,
Even defrosts and shuts off during that. But runs 23 hours straight.

Update:
Replaced control thermostat.
Temp now at 38 on low setting, no ice on coils but fridge runs all the time
