Kenmore gas dryer doesn't always heat up

I have a Kenmore gas dryer that doesn't always get warm. Sometimes it just runs with out drying. I have checked the gas line, however since it works occasionally, I didn't expect to find a problem. I slightly turned the fitting and could smell gas so I tightened it back up.
It has 3 settings, timed dry, air fluff and auto dry. I have settled using auto dry, because if the dryer does not heat up, it keeps tumbling and eventually the clothes get dry.
I have also checked the vent hose, and have tried running it for a short period of time with the hose disconnected. No difference. I am not sure what the next step would be. I am assuming there is a igniter, since there is no pilot light. Can any one help me with some in home trouble shooting tips? Thanks Rich

On my Kenmore, there's an electrical glow-plug to ignite the burner. Now and then, it did what you're describing and when I pulled the glow plug and cleaned off a lot of accumulated crap, it started working fine. One of the connections was a little flimsy, too, and I tightened that up. Those igniters can go bad, too, particularly if the control circuit fails and they stay energized constantly.

I appreciate your help. I'm going to pull the back off tonight after dinner. Hope I can see something obvious.

On the Kenmores I've had, that ignitor is at the bottom of the burner housing under the drum... you can disconnect the dryer and see it beneath.

success

Well I decided not to wait until after dinner, and dove right in. After I remioed the back, I removed the chute that goes from the bottom of the drum up to the lint filter. I always clean the lint filter when I use the dryer, bot that thing was loaded. I scraped and vacuumed all the lint I could, removed the chute from the burner to the top of the drum and vaced that also. Wiped off the 3 elec. "sensors" I saw at the back on the 2 chutes. Don't know what they do, but I figured clean is better than dirty.
Anyway, plugged it back in and it fired the first try. Feelin pretty good about it now. Thanks for your help.

You're welcome, Rich. Yeah, they'll pack up with garbage over time. Odds are, you found the problem.
