gas dryer not drying like normal

Hey guys,

Last week I posted a thread about changing a drum wheel on my Kenmore HE4 gas dryer. It was one on the rear and I removed the rear panel and was able to replace it without having to remove the drum itself.

Since then though, the dryer doesn't seem to be working like it used to. I just removed the front lower panel and turned it on and noticed that the burner ignites for about 13 seconds, then it shuts off for about a minute, and then it ignites again for the same 13 seconds. Is this normal behavior for a gas dryer, or is it shutting down too quickly? I've never had the need to observe how long the burners should be on so any comments are appreciated.

Re: gas dryer not drying like normal

Did you mess with the exhaust venting, Cleaned the venting lately, a nearly plugged exhaust severely delays the time it takes to dry the clothing.

Is there a filter screen that needs care, did you reattach the vent hose,

A gas expert might be along with the answer to your question, Sorry that I don't know.

Actually I did clean the exhaust vent a bit. I didn't take the whole thing down as I did that last year and it wasn't as bad this year. The filter screen is cleaned after each use and I put everything back the way it was. Thanks for the reply.

I thought of another thing.

In the springtime, Young Cocks ( male birds), start thinking of romance, and build a nest to bring the new bride home to, often this nest is built in an accessible dryer exhaust vent.

Have you looked in the outside vent, to see if the mesh has been pushed away, and a nest is in there?

Re: gas dryer not drying like normal

Yesterday after reading your comments I decided to move the dryer and clean out the vent. The inside of the dryer wasn't too bad as I had cleaned it last year but the vent definitely needed cleaning as it was worse than I thought. I didn't see any blockages but got quite a bit of lint out of it. I then went outside and checked the exhaust vent and while there were no bird nests or anything, it was also a bit linty. Cleaned it out as well and later on ran a load of towels in the dryer. This time they were dry when the cycle finished so I'm assuming your diagnosis was correct. Appreciate the replies.

YEA, I like it when a simple idea was what was needed.

So a lesson to everyone, a cursory cleaning of the area , won't be " good enuf", Thoroughly clean the entire dryer venting system.

Save energy, MONEY, and aggravation.

I am glad to help.
