Can I put items on top of my refigerator or freezer

I have an upright freezer in a storage room that I want to store a rubbermaid tub (doesn't weigh much at all, has artificial flowers in it) on the top of. I ran a couple of 2x4's across the top and put the tub on that. Now the tub does not cover the entire top surface, it is only about 18inches wide, the freezer about...30 inches or so. It is a big freezer. Will the 2x4's allow enough air flow? I have been told that freezers and refrigerators need to exhaust heat through the top surface. If that is the case I don't understand how people put cabinets down to them?

Freezers need air space to expel heat from wherever the coils are located, usually at the bottom or the rear. I can't say I've ever seen a fridge or freezer with the coils at the top except the very early ones.
I think you would be good to go provided the articles aren't too heavy. If the freezer is up against a wall try not to push things all the way to the rear so air can circulate.

If there is still room for hot air to pass by it, you should be fine. I wouldn't have even bothered with the 2x4s.
