AC clutch plate removal

People,

Impossible to remove my 2001 civic ac compressor clutch plate. I removed the 14mm nut, exposing a splined shaft. Because some plates have bolts, one can insert a special extraction "bolt", but mine does not have a bolt, just a nut. How does one remove the plate? I tried prying gently along the outer side circle of the plate but hesitate to pry too much as one can warp the plate, right?

What do I do, people?

Re: AC clutch plate removal

Get the special plate puller tool for your particular compressor.
Any other attempts to remove plate will destroy components and make the job much more costly than the tool.

Been there -- done that!

Re: AC clutch plate removal

You most likely have spring lock. It is hidden inside the clutch, on shaft. If that's the case, you will need special tipped pliers, angled to 90 degrees, to reach inside to compress the spring.. Do not go cheap on them, when buying. I had set of cheap ones, after 2 hrs of struggling to remove locking spring, I bought better tool and had job done in 5 minutes.

If ya get in a bind for snap ring plier tips and sizes / angles, as a DIY'er you can make good straight and 90 tips from those old extra Allen wrenches.

Re: AC clutch plate removal

I don't know about your Honda, but the couple vehicles of that age that I've worked on the A/C for, the clutch wasn't available because it wasn't removable without taking the compressor apart. If you are able to find a replacement clutch, yours may be different.

If possible, I suggest visiting one of those pull-it-yourself junkyards and experiment with removing one off of a junked vehicle, before you get tto aggressive with yours.

Wow- soo helpful! Why didnt I find that?!! Thanks, porche! But I have to mention - he got lucky- his plate popped off just by the touch of his fingers. Mine I had to pry/jiggle/tap, etc. Finally came off.

Re: AC clutch plate removal

Found a site that supplies a clutch/plate kit. Will buy that one and use just the plate for now- no need to yank the tedious clutch for now. My plate has about 1/2 of the circumference of the grabbing area worn down to the bone. Glad I did this instead of suspecting the compressor, at least for now, seems it's the fault of the clutch plate.

My year (2001) is still available, but as a complete clutch kit. Why dont they sell just the plate if one only needs that? Sheesh. Couldnt fine one anywhere (separately, that is).

It's funny as it was the first one I found when doing a generic search . I hope it was helpful and good luck with your repair .

Hey, consider yourself lucky; my only option was to replace the compressor, so I had to buy a vacuum pump to draw it down, and then recharge it, on top of the cost of the compressor.
