Paint Will Not Lay Down (Brush Marks)

Ok I'm using a pretty good quality paint (Mccormick Paints Total Advantage Semi-Gloss

I'm not over brushing and have added latex additive (Floetrol) but it still won't lay down.

Help

What is the air and substrate temperature? Is this interior or exterior?
Sometimes it's beneficial to thin the paint and apply 2 coats.

I've never heard of that paint. I stopped using floetrol a long time ago. I use glycol based extenders now. They work much better, but they do thin the paint, and makes sags happen easier. You also need a very good soft brush. I like Coronas.

Re: Paint Will Not Lay Down (Brush Marks)

Funny, just this weekend at my daughter's I'm biotching about some really crappy Behr "premium" satin. I have used Behr on other jobs and do not know if they have drastically changed the formula.

One, it would not lay down and brushed on like crap..... Purdy's best latex soft brush. You could not keep up with a wet edge doing a raised panel door.

I went and got XIM extender, it helped.

I ended up doing the door in sections considering it's fast skimming property. (This was done early in the morning, relatively cool 60 degrees, moist ocean mist in Half Moon Bay. First the panels, then the verticals and horizontals.

Two coats/relatively heavy, over a preprimed interior doors, and still did not get great coverage.

I do not remember Behr being THIS CRAPPY...at $42/Gal.)

Re: Paint Will Not Lay Down (Brush Marks)

I've heard of and have used McCormick coatings but it was a long time ago and I've never used much of it. Since I barely remember it I assume it was neither crappy or spectacular BUT most paint brands have bad, good and best lines.

I don't recall ever hearing of a high build latex enamel.

Re: Paint Will Not Lay Down (Brush Marks)

I don't know how much is the paint itself but I think the brush and brushing technique is also playing a part.

Behr has always been crap. You pay for the fancy marketing not high quality.

High temp and dry brushing. Or crappy paint. OR all three for the WIN!

Re: Paint Will Not Lay Down (Brush Marks)

Its all three. I guarantee I could make crappy paint look a lot better than that. I also know what paints to use to make it look even better, and most of them are specifically designed for trim. And, I use a nice, soft brush.

A chains only as strong as its weakest link.

Interior conditioned space. I don't know what dry brushing is. The paint is a high end McCormick paint.
