Old stairs in need of paint

Advice needed.

We're in a very old house. The stairs have been painted with what is most likely oil based paint from the fifties. The banisters seem to have old paint with primer on them. There are chip spots where the older, thick paint has flaked off.

I want to paint it all, in a way that is going to be durable, and with as little fuss as possible. Do I use filler on the cracked parts or just sand? How much sanding is necessary? (Because this stuff is very thick, and the construction quality isn't so great that I'm not tempted to rip it all out and start fresh.) What paints are recommended to cover the old trim (glossy oil?) and the treads?

Anyone with successful first hand experience dealing with old house cleanup on a budget have viable advice? Thanks in advance.

clean with a good detergent. Anything loose needs to be removed but you do not need to get to bare wood otherwise sand smooth with 150 grit. caulk edges and prime with BM024 or 046. 2 coats of a floor enamel like N122 latex porch and floor. Trim you can use the floor enamel, cabinetcoat, advance, scuffx or whatever equivalent paint you feel like using.

Re: Old stairs in need of paint

I washed my old painted early 1900s stairs and then painted them with good floor and deck paint. After 25 years they still looked good, but I changed them to stained oak at the direction of the Boss.

Re: Old stairs in need of paint

By "changing" do you mean you stripped them or you just replaced the treads with new lumber? Thanks.
