Old paint: Disposal

I have some (more than a few) cans of old paint to dispose but the local disposal companies will only take it if the remaining paint has been mixed with kitty litter and has hardened. All well and good - but how does one get 20 yo lids off some of these cans?
My bad for letting this all go so long but i really want to get rid of this stuff. So i tried a can opener....epic fail of course. Have tried prying the lids with screwdrivers...stabbed a few out of frustration...running out of options.

Does anybody have any suggestions for removing the old lids?

Thanks!

I have seen situations where it's literally impossible to remove the lids in the normal fashion and simple brute force must be used to "open" the top of the can. It's messy, somewhat unsafe and never pretty.

Hoping that won't be the case. Still hoping for a reasonable way to dismantle the lids. But thanks anyways, Wildbill.
