Do you have it? Getting an anti-viral early makes a big difference.

No, but it was thought I had a mild case of shingles in the rib cage area about 20 years ago.

I just heard about this new vaccine info. on our local news. It seems as if my wife isn't taking very good care of me because she has had the new vaccinations, a 2 part series.

See if I ever get her another propane tank for our anniversary.

Re: Viral Infection - Shingles

I had it at a relatively young, adult age. I just had itching on my shoulder, but I recognized the blisters & went to the doc's to get meds. That was it. Whew! I didn't even feel especially stressed or under the weather. It's a really weird disease.

When I worked in Hawaii, many of the local hospital staff got Chickenpox when exposed to patients with Shingles (herpes zoster) because they'd never had the childhood diseases we had on the US Mainland. It's very contagious by touch.
Don't go around unknown children with it.

Speaking of diseases:
I don't even want to go out in public right now. I just read that the US has the highest rate of 3 common STDs ever.

EVER!

I carry Isopropyl alcohol in the car. If I get stopped by the CHP, it smells like a distillery!

Never been to Hawaii, but I have never had ANY childhood diseases....measles, mumps, chickenpox, etc. Still have my appendix and tonsils. I tread lightly in hospitals to say the least.

Did they ever test your blood? You can have a very low grade case.

Mom actually made me drink after my sister when she had all those maladies but I never caught any of them. Never had blood tests to see.

I think I had just about all the childhood diseases. As for the shingles shot, the VA gave me the shot and it really messed me up, I thought my heart was going to stop. If I had it to do over again, I would not take it. JMHO

Just goes to show how vaccines truly have risks and benefits and whether to vaccinate or not is a matter of personal choice.

Yet if you say anything negative about vaccines or avoid some of thme, in today's society you're labelled a crazy anti-vaxxer, anti-science.

Nik - Just what do you do when you go out?

My step mother had shingles twice that I can remember, both later in life. Very painful. She immigrated as a warbride and I don't know if she ever had a chickenpox vaccination.
I had the shingles vaccination a couple of years ago - no side effects. Also had both pneumonia vaccinations. I'm all set to be run over by a bus.

don't you have to get into contact with bodily fluids to get infected?

I assume you mean shingles rather than the rampant gonorrhea, syphilis & chlamydia.

It's the blister juice that gets you. But, if you haven't had chickenpox, you get chickenpox. It used to be much more of a risk to children with cancer before the vaccinations. But, nowadays you don't know who is vaccinated.

I believe chickenpox is airborne. Extremely infectious. Hangs in the air like TB. I'll check.

Once you have it, it stores itself in your spine & comes out when you're stressed or immunosuppressed. It was very common in hospitalized patients after surgery or serious illness.

I used to get in back & forth conversations with young docs. Me: I think he has shingles. Him: No, I don't think so. Me: Have you ever seen shingles? Him: No.

One guy was in for chest pain, rule out heart attack. When I washed his back I saw the tiny, new blisters. He was discharged.

Weird stuff.
