They're baaack

Looks like somebody was foolish enough to park under a streetlight. Around here, only seem small quantities so far. Usually into July before the main wave hits.

Re: They're baaack

Around here we have flocks of birds that swoop and dive, feeding on bugs swarming around lights.

Makes for a double messy area.

Re: They're baaack

Yeah, nuisance that they are, the mayflies do proclaim a healthy ecology. The nymphs in the water need plenty of oxygen and if they don't get it they just give up, along with the many creatures that feed on them.

So, I'd sweep 'em up and go fishing for some great fish!

I remember growing up along the shores of Lake Erie in the 1960s and 1070s and there were almost no mayflies at all. Almost none. We had midges, which are a non-biting mosquito fly relative, but almost no mayflies.

So I'm glad to see them back. So's my brother. He'll go fishing . . . .

Re: They're baaack

Had a small wave come through last week. I think its a different variety that comes a little earlier.
It sure looked intentional when a bird landed hard on some cedars behind my house, scatting the mayflies that were on it, and then the bird went after the mayflies.

They were (and still are) a good indicator for fishing. Slightly different but one year we had a huge hatch of big dragonflies. Out bass fishing and the bass were in a feeding frenzy. We saw some clear the water by 2' to grab a dragonfly right out of the air. Fishing was very good that day.

Yeah, but try driving at night when they are out. You can't even use your windshield wipers to clear the mess.

I remember one time driving to Jackson, WY and we had to stop at every gas station to clean our windows.

Which reminds me, Ed, where in the great state of WY are you? I want to move there but my wife said no. I think CO is getting too crowded!!

I be about 3 miles north of Casper, in the prairie.

I graduated high school on the western slope of Colorado, in Nucla.

I agree that Colorado is crowded now, with too many pot users, producers.

Stupid in my opinion to "legalize" it there a few years ago.

But the "Tax" money is Sooooo worth it. Just ask the Democrats.

Personally, I don't care all that much. I haven't touched that stuff since June, 1977.

And, since the doc won't let me drive by myself, I don't have to worry about the potheads driving. But where I live, it is pretty much ranchers, farmers and the like. Although, on the hill west of us, there are celebs like Keanu Reeves, Michelle Pfeiffer and the like, as well as Wealthy (with a capital W) people like Paul Jones (Son of Dow Jones..)

Paul is actually a great guy. He is a great supporter of the community. He helped pay for the road improvements on Hwy 9 (About half of it, plus donated material) which included 2 animal overpasses and several underpasses. And he is helping to pay for the Airport improvements. Which of course he wants as he wants to land his bigger jets. (He has to fly in a different jet than his wife or son, whoever is designated as his heir. It is a ***** to be that rich!!)

I was talking to the owner of a gas station near me. When the fish flies are out, he closes up early. Nobody will stop at his station after it starts getting dark.

Re: They're baaack

Local baseball game cancelled due to fish flies. We had a bit of a reprieve from the fish flies the other day ---- long enough for me to stain my deck.

@SPS-1 , how long does "Fish Fly" season last? I thought it was short, but maybe it's too long . . . .

Re: They're baaack

That is a LOT of fish flies. We have that problem once a year in Gimli, which is on Lake Winnipeg.

Lots of commercial fishing on Lake Wpg and maybe that is why they are there. Huge mess for a week and then they go away.

Not something I would want to live with. Canker worms are a huge mess when we get them.

Re: They're baaack

It was a girl's baseball game. The catcher was saying she was crying as she tried to stay in position waiting for the pitch.

Fish fly season only a couple of weeks long, with most coming within maybe a four day peak period. Also a previous wave about 3-4 weeks earlier of what must be a slightly different variety. Lakes are all at or near record height, so it takes a little longer this year for water to reach the temperature where they come out. If I am lucky, wind direction is such that it blows them away from my place rather than towards my house.
