Re: Tail of the Dragon

there is a huge difference in Leaf Peepers (tourists) and those on
motorcycles "Twisting the Dragon's Tail".
I myself, am the former - not enough nerve or skill to ride a 900 pound
Harley half way on its side for miles and miles and miles.
if you ever get the chance, do it at least once during the "Leaf Season".

awesome photo, Larry !! thanks for sharing.

It sucks to be the driver and you can't enjoy the view.
We are going up to Townsend tomorrow, but not on up to that trail. We may go through Cades Cove but not sure.

I'm old enough and have ridden long enough to know where my, and my bike's, 'edge' is.

It's not. But there are another 1000 miles of great peeping roads very close to this specific 11 miles which you can still do and as slowly as you need to feel safe. But if you wait to bunch up with a pack before heading out everyone will enjoy it.

Have fun. We love Townsend, the quiet side of the Smokey's.
It has been years since we have been. We came out of Cade's Cove on Parsons Branch Road, which was closed for may years. It comes out onto the Tail of the Dragon. Take a right, and you head back to Maryvile. Take a left and you head down the mountain toward NC!

Are you talking about the Smokey Mountain Parkway?

I heard they finally connected some more of the road through Wears Valley.

We like Townsend also, we do usually drive over to Pigeon Forge and grab a donut.

When Sawyer's Farm House Restaurant is open, we have breakfast there, they have a great breakfast but, close at 10:00 am.

Re: Tail of the Dragon

Speaking of good places to eat breakfast, early in our relationship, I would tell my wife the way to tell if a place has a good breakfast is to count the pick up trucks in the parking lot. Mountain folk KNOW where to eat.

To this day, when we go out to eat, she always reminds me "there's a place with pick up trucks, let's eat there"

Sounds reasonable to me.

Re: Tail of the Dragon

Thanks for sharing @chandler48 !

Reminds me of life back in Ohio; every year the leaves turned, starting north, then heading south. Still remember driving into Pittsburgh one year, everywhere you looked the hills and mountains covered with fall foliage just like in the picture.

If you can't do the rides, book a flight over the eastern U.S., and be sure to get a window seat, lordy lordy, like that only bigger.

We have Fall but probably not as long. 90/45 doesn't promote it except in the mountains.
We get fall here in So-Cal, between Thanksgiving and Christmas. All the liquidambars turn color, some streets are full of them.
