India culture???

Is this a culture thing.

An elderly, frail Indian man walks around here. Understands English but he was hard to understand. We passed each other.

My daughter and I introduced ourselves. He kissed her hand and hugged her. I thought maybe he knew her.

Then he hugged me tightly.... (considering hes old an frail).

Was he just friendly or are people from India like that.

Re: India culture???

I think he was just friendly and friendly people come from all over the world.

Not going to get into any stereotypes but my BIL is East Indian and his parents are from India. Arranged marriage and the whole nine yards.

Some are very religious and pious and my BIL and his family are. Some religious people are friendlier than average if they have a good or deep connection to their faith IMO.

Talking to his father they have a deep hatred for Pakistan and if you know the history of Gandhi and what happened it has never been resolved.

Some can tend to be a bit aggressive or seemingly a bit harsh from what I see but it all depends on the individual at the end of the day as to how they want to conduct themselves. Mean miserable people know no borders.

Re: India culture???

Funny!

There are probably many on this chatroom, I hope they respond. There is no single culture. There are many religions & cultures. You could probably look at a Wikipedia on India to find the diversity.

I've known many from India ( mostle doctors but others, too) & never been hugged but have been offered a few questionable things. Other cultures have hugged me. This thread may be sent to CBR.

Much like with the Asian lady, we don't know if he has dementia. But, I'd say most are careful & circumspect, for a long time.

Dave has been teaching me on CBR, to keep my physical distance with all strangers. There are some problems with touching in India. You can search that, esp places like trains & buses.

He may just be a lonely widower. I'd be friendly but keep my distance. Large garden shears in your hands help. Ask your neighbors about him.
You can ask the police, too. Here, they can't tell you if they have a record but often can hint, esp the older cops. Look at the sex offenders' registry for your neighborhood ( which you should have done already.)

Don't tell him your marital status. Mention your son(s). A cheap wedding ring helps. Cheap because of gardening.

I was just thinking this morning that I never had problems when I had Marines as tenants. They left their boots by the door.

He may just like to hug.

Re: India culture???

Yeah, i just thought he was lonely an maybe really happy someone talked to him. And, at his age many friends probably have passed away.

My hugs are a loose lean in while standing away.

Re: India culture???

I wouldn't hug him, even loosely.

I don't think most Indian women would. I'll ask some I know around here.

I was caught by surprise and didn't have much choice other than bopping him on the head.

Re: India culture???

My BIL his Grand Mother lived to be 104.

I suspect he was just being uber friendly and was totally harmless.

I have a group of them who get together everyday at our local park. The Bombay Bicycle Club. They all ride bikes and have their traditional turbans on and long beards.

I enjoy the multi-cultural aspect and we have lots of that in Winnipeg. We have a huge 2 week festival called Folklarama with pavilions and food and entertainment from dozens of different ethnic groups.

And now you have be aware that it could happen again and maybe the next time you see him. You have to accept or find a polite way to turn it down.

Re: India culture???

I talked to a Sikh friend when I was out tonight. He & I have had hundreds of cultural discussions & debates over several years. He is from India but a Canadian citizen now. His wife & kids are in Canada while he works here. He's in his 40's. Sikhs are not Hindu. They have a monotheistic religion.

When I told him your story, he immediately shook his head. He said, no, it was not normal for an Indian man to be hugging strange women. He said he is testing you to see how far you would let him go. He then stated he is going to get arrested. He was very firm much to my surprise. He said it is illegal when not wanted. I guess he's familiar with others who assume things about American women.

I thought it was unusual but he surprised me with how emphatic he was.
It makes sense with a culture with arranged marriages.

He also mentioned there aren't a lot of Sikhs in Florida.
They wear turbans & don't cut their beards or hair.
This friend does cut his beard & hair to fit in with the community.
They're a warrior culture.

Now Baptists hug a lot.

Re: India culture???

Of all the many cultures I deal with working for the public, Filipinos ( the women mostly ) seem to be the friendliest. Maybe because a lot are devout Catholics/Christians.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filipinos

Not sure if it is in or part of their culture and how their women behave but I have yet to run into a unfriendly unkind miserable one. Unlike a LOT of other people I deal with.

There are lots of Sikhs and Filipinos in Winnipeg.

Re: India culture???

@Startingover , bless your heart for your cautious kindness.

I can't recall any culture where people just hug strangers, sounds like the guy's a bit off his rocker. I must concur with @Nik333 's admonitions to be careful, though don't be paranoid.

India is a fascinating polyglot place. They've been multicultural long before we here in the "west" even had words for that. And, a review of Indian history shows it hasn't always been easy.

I've had the chance to get to know many Indians in my time, and the differences between the Sikhs and Hindus, to name two, are startling sometimes, it's hard to believe they're from the same country.

I'm hard put to imagine two groups of people more different than the Sikhs and Hindus. "Upper caste" Hindus won't do manual labor, don't even ask. Sikhs don't believe in that caste stuff. That's just for starters.

And then there's the Indian Moslems of which there's still a good number, one of whom we had to sue a while back . . . .

Re: India culture???

I have Hindu neighbors. Lots of Khans, (often Muslim) also.
I'm not sure why they like it here so much. Cheaper land, lots of employment.
Sikhs are taking over trucking.

@DoomsDave , usually the farms with long entrances made of palms are theirs.
