Froggy in the house...

All winter long we heard( a couple of times a week) a frog outside.
It was coming from the direction of the dining room - it sounded like
he was against the wall behind the server.
... there is an outdoor server, (behind the indoor server) so we assumed he
was hiding in the outside server. I kept saying...he’s so loud and clear,
it almost sounds like he’s in the house!

Well, apparently I was right, he must have been wintering over behind the indoor server,
( or inside it) as I discovered him in the shower Saturday before Easter.

We put him outside by the pond, apparently, it’s too cold outside cause we discovered
him hiding back up on the deck under a chair cushion yesterday.

We brought him back inside and I made him a makeshift home
with a glass bowl with a plastic top and a heavy rock on top.
This morning when I looked in there he was gone!
Luckily, I found him right away in the corner
of the family room. I put him back...going to need a bigger rock on top.

Houdini is a good name for him.

How about a picture?

When I was a kid I had a garter snake my mom called Houdini, for pretty much the same reasons.

Re: Froggy in the house...

My boys always had snakes...they started with garter snakes and then
boa snakes...one snake escaped out of the cage ( Monster was his name)
and we never found it! I slept downstairs on the couch for three weeks
before I would go upstairs.

here’s Houdini...

A cute froggy! Powerful, too.

Tried to find out what kind it is, so far no luck.

He likes to sit in the water?

Yes, last night he sat on the big rock, and also croaked a few times.
I think he’s some kind of a toad.p

Re: Froggy in the house...

Consult your county's Ag department, they have experts there, that can tell you what it is, and if it is safe for you to keep indoors.

And how it could winter in the house, with no food supply, or water to drink

Re: Froggy in the house...

We’ve been battling little ants all winter...I guess between the ants and
occasional spider he got by....but how did he get water??? Donno, unless
he traveled the long hop into the shower each night!

Why would it not be safe to keep in the house?

Some frogs and toads are poisonous (some are really poisonous) so if you have a dog or cat and they decide to dine on froggy, that could be a problem for them.

As long as they have enough moisture, toads take things a lot drier than regular frogs do, though they have to have some.

I think it’s a grey tree frog.

Here’s the link.

Have you tried Terro Ant Killer? I used to have tiny ants show up in the spring in my family room. Have no idea where they come from but they'd always be at the corner of a closet. I put Terro on small pieces of cardboard and the ants would come and feast on it non-stop. They were gone within a week. This stuff is supposed to be eaten by the ants who then take it back to the nest and feed it to the queen, killing the nest.

Re: Froggy in the house...

As said, some are as deadly as a rattlesnake, maybe not in your state, or mine, but some are dangerous.

Here they burrow deep in the mud, and hibernate there over the winter.

Still seems odd that you have one indoors, as I thought that they have a short life cycle, like after spawning each spring, they die, and make room for the new generation.

County Ag office would be my next stop, or visit on-line, with a picture.

We cannot buy turtles in Manitoba at pet stores as apparently you can get salmonella from them?

I wonder if frogs or toads can do the same to you. I would be leery about handling them or the water they sit in.

Why would a turtle want to be in Manitoba?

Re: Froggy in the house...

Our pond attracts a lot of frogs. Mainly Bull Frogs...
One got so big, and he became tame. His name was Budweiser.

My guy would toss him
earth worms when he fed the fish earth worms.
One day I saw him eat a bird. He was so big and fat.

After he ate the bird, I rolled him around with a stick, he
was so full he couldn’t hop, really.

After that we took him to the fishing hole.
We wrote a short story about him. He was hilarious.
I was sorry I had to get rid of him. I was afraid he
would start to like sushi.
