Firecrackers? Deputies

So.
I heard 4-5 firecrackers a while ago. Too tired to go tell whoever there’s a noise ordinance here.

Im on a corner. Neighbors were calling to ask whats going on, on side street. I looked out an there were 12 sheriff cars by my house. I walked out my side yard to ask what was going on an they told me to go inside. I said I heard firecrackers an a deputy said he heard them too.

On hindsight maybe walking out in my yard when its full of deputies wasn’t safe but if it had been dangerous would they have knocked an told me to stay inside? Then a guy had a tripod set up and was looking my way.

They did have that road blocked with their cars. They’ve all left now.

Can you tell the difference between fireworks and a small caliber handgun? It's never a good idea to go out and investigate when a bunch of cops are responding to a call. You don't know what you're walking in to.

Re: Firecrackers? Deputies

Does your community have microphones spread around the city to help pinpoint where shootings happen? This could have been a calibration run.

But did you go out in your jammies? Or in your boxers and a robe? And holding a white Russian?

Curious minds want to know!

@Startingover . Don't believe him, he probably had his fingers crossed as he typed his response.

But then again, Peter is probably responsible for setting them off in the first place. He is a weisenheimer.

Re: Firecrackers? Deputies

Ktown, I doubt it. Highly populated city but with a country atmosphere.

On one hand I thought I had a vested interest in learning what was going on but maybe they think that would have alerted more noisy neighbors who would get in their way.

How did you know? Pajamas. Everything unusual happens when I’m in pajamas, like s lady got knocked down by a neighbors dog, in my yard. Then a drunk flipped his van in my yard. An this is a quiet nice neighborhood. My yard attracts strange things. This time I put a long coat over my pajamas an since its hot out i may have looked goofy.

Keep a cotton dress around, that you can throw over your pjs if you really must talk to them. I''m sure they see people at their worst all the time.

Once when there was a prowler, I answered the door only slightly, in an old ratty comfortable nightgown. When the cop looked concerned I realized it was torn & he was wondering if the famous prowler was inside. I reassured him. Great cops in Long Beach.

Was there a helicopter? That's when I really stay inside.
If we go out, we're just more work for them & at risk.

Nik, yes they have a helicopter that I see all the time. It wasn’t here tonight. Good idea, evidently I need to plan a nighttime emergency outfit. A beach coverup will work or sweat pants.

Sweat pants might be too hot in a hot climate. Walmart has those inexpensive rayon housedress/nightgowns.

I lived in a bad neighborhood for six years. ( You can get a really nice house & yard there). The neighbors would gather in the dozens to watch if someone had been shot. Lots of different gangs. Only gathered after everything is safe. Of course, with gangs you never know.

Fascinating place.

Re: Firecrackers? Deputies

Dang, your right, I forget about the bucolic life here in the Rockies.

Yes, there are murders, there was one last week. A lot of drug traffic. And sexual assault.

Still, most people don't lock their doors. But, there are a lot of guns here, not to mention dogs. And neighbors know who belongs where.

Surprisingly, not a lot of fireworks though. We are much too aware of fire danger.

Re: Firecrackers? Deputies

There was a man shot 5 miles south in a little town. Maybe thats why roads were blocked. It was the only thing newsworthy. The shooter later returned and was apprehended.

Re: Firecrackers? Deputies

Nik, they aren’t very forthcoming. Last yr a car went thru stop sign on my corner an hit house. Driver ran off. I called for info on the driver/neighbors house and was told “if they’re a neighbor ask them!” Which I thought a snotty answer. I just wondered if the driver was caught. I’ve met the sheriff at events and next time will ask him how or if residents can inquire.

A couple yrs ago 6 deputy cars blew past my house an stopped 3 blocks away. I was out walking. I asked a neighbor then an a 14 yo had snuck on a back porch to steal cigarettes an the lady homeowner caught him.

I just feel nervous when I see a bunch of deputies nearby an knowing why makes me feel better.

Re: Firecrackers? Deputies

Gunshots aren't that unusual where we live. Hunters, target practice, or one of the neighbors popping woodchucks in the garden.

One time I was down in S Florida on business, in a city which will remain nameless, and my wife had come along for the trip. Walking back to the hotel one evening, shots rang out. She kept walking, totally unfazed.

Until I turned to her and said, "You know...they're not shooting at woodchucks..."

That got her to quicken her pace a little.

Then there was the time we had company over our house. A shot rang out. A guest screamed "what was THAT???" in a near-panic.

I turned to look at my wife. She calmly said "could be a .22." I thought for a moment and said "no, that was more like a 30.06."
