For Canadian bread buyers

I just found out Loblaws was "overcharging for bread" and got caught.

Now they are offering Canadians a $25 gift card if you register for one before May and have bought these types of bread from them.

Here is the link for more info:

Some people have even been donating those cards to the food banks in their area

So if Weston did it to bread what about everything else? I heard rumour of a class action.

If so, I would imagine registering for the gift card precludes you from a class action??

Apparently there will be one and if us consumers win they will deduct the $25 from the settlement and you may get more. Probably most people will forget about it as the lawsuit may drag on for years. They will be happy to get the card.

Strangely enough I buy lots of their Country Harvest bread at the Real Cdn Superstore and drop off an extra loaf in the Winnipeg Harvest Bin at the door when I leave.

Hmmm, maybe they should get a $25 card as they got "taken" too.

Re: For Canadian bread buyers

The way I understand it, there is a class action forming and Loblaw's position is that 'gift card' recipients who also register for the class action would have any award reduced by the value of the card ($25). A court recently struck down an attempt by the lawyers for the class action to rule against this condition.

BTW, it's apparently not a gift card in the traditional sense. It is only valid a Loblaw/Weston group companies.

Re: For Canadian bread buyers

The card can be use in any of the Loblaw chain of stores for groceries. No tobacco or lottery tickets or paying your credit card with it. That fine with me. I buy groceries at No Frills.

From what I read while registering, 6 to 12 weeks.

Re: For Canadian bread buyers

As an American I don't get it. How can you overcharge for bread? When I shop I look at the price tag and buy or don't buy the product.

Apparently they've admitted to price fixing with other grocery chains.
That's a no-no.

Apparently they were in co-hoots with their major rival > Canada Bread Co who is also involved in the lawsuit. Sounds like they both got together and fixed prices.

Re: For Canadian bread buyers

I see. Price fixing is illegal here too. Looks like they will lose some bread.
