So, yeah, I'm new....

Hi, my name is OrangeDIY and I like to DIY!

I have renovated nearly a full house before and would consider myself to be rather handy. I only recently relocated from South Africa where building codes are somewhat lax, I did my own electrical, plumbing, gas, ceilings insulations and all other general home related work. I hate painting, although I can do it. I can't tile and I cannot lay brick or plaster. Everything else I figure out by instinct, YouTube and forums like these.

Now that I'm in the USA(GA) though, working on a wood structure is quite different.
Yodaman and DoomsDave like this.

Welcome Orange,
Yes codes, permits, and licensing will be different, don't hesitate to ask.

@OrangeDIY , welcome.

Codes vary in the U.S., as does their enforcement. Generally, if you're near or in a big city, the rules get tougher and are enforced more rigorously. But not always.

Start by inquiring and asking. Maybe go to a local hardware store, explaining the situation and hearing what they have to say. Bear in mind that opinions will vary and it's wise to seek a number of them.

Good luck and let us know what you do and how it turns out.

And, where in SA are you from? Just curious.

Thanks DoomsDave, I'm from Pretoria, South Africa.

Currently I'm busy fixing my subfloor on first floor so that I can lay bamboo flooring. I need to move laundry closet to basement and then remove a wall or two to open up the living space. For this latter part I'm trying to get an engineer's approval and advice.

Ah, the Orange Free State?

I've got another correspondent in SA who's from Bloemfontein.

Hahaha, yip. Born and raised in Bloemfontein, moved to Pretoria to study engineering at the University there. I generally use the phrase 'Orange' in all my online persona's.

Was it humid over there in SA? It'll sure be in Georgia.

No, not in the parts I stayed. It is humid on the east coast and North eastern parts called the Lowveld.
