Question

Building a Corner Workstation

I saw a MICKE Corner Workstation on Ikea. It shows dimensions and a how to for building. The desk costs $150. Would it be cheaper to just build it myself with wood from Home Depot cut to the correct sizes and shapes?

Cheaper? Probably not.

You won't have all their little hardware pieces so you would have to do a lot more to make it sturdy, when all is said and done you would have trouble beating their price I think.

Re: Building a Corner Workstation

I was planning on basing it on the Ikea workstation, but using actual screws, etc. instead. With this in account, do you still think it costly?

Their junky little hardware bit actually hold things better than screws, so you would have to redesign it with cleats. You would likely build it better than theirs but time and materials
How many sheets of plywood would you need.

No. Would be far more expensive. You get to say you did it yourself, which is definitely worth something. But you will spend more for sure.

Those sizes will have to be cut from sheet. Maybe somebody here can make veneered plywood look that good, but its not me. I would be putting high pressure laminate on it. Start pricing out just a couple of sheets of wood, a few sheets of laminate, a gallon of contact cement, a good roller...

Then again, that photo may look too good. Wonder if the real thing looks that good.
