What's the typical size of the roof joist?

I need to install a few wall wash recess lights on a vaulted ceiling.

The housing has a 5.5" depth.

Are the joist usually 2x6"

My vaulted ceiling looks thinner, but the old rafters are 2 x 8's. The reason it looks thinner was the manner of framing at my picture windows at ceiling height is a bit deceiving. If your roof has much length to it 2 x 6's would be small unless they are double thickness, (4 x 6 glued together) which I had at a house I owned many years ago. As you can see, I like vaulted ceilings. Craig

A scissor truss or at least 2x10. The truss mat be 2x4 but should have space above.

A straightened coat hanger with a hand cut chisel point can be used to to test the depth before any large holes are cut.
