What is this on basement wall edge

Please see attached photos... What could these little wood particles be?
This was on the basement wall edge. I don't see this anywhere else in the basement (parts that are exposed). Basement is finished and house is 20 years old.
Thanks!

Possibly carpenter ants but I see what looks like droppings. Check above for more clues.

Re: What is this on basement wall edge

What is outside the wall at that point? Is there concrete exposed between the ground and the siding material of the house?

Vacuum it up thoroughly and see if it comes back.
Fix'n it likes this.

I think outside that point it is ground maybe a few inches below. On this side of the wall there is a deck. The deck floor is above that point.

I looking at those pictures it looks like the sawdust of falling from above because you can see on top of some of the wires in a little bit on the ledge. If you look directly up at the ceiling in that area do you see anything?

Re: What is this on basement wall edge

Do you see any ants in your house? Looks like frass.. Are those droppings or dead ants?

How long has that sawdust been piling up?

You say the deck is attached there? Can u inspect below the deck for any damage? Wet rotten spots? Carpenter ants love wet wood.. Perfect home for them..

Re: What is this on basement wall edge

we once did some work for a doctor who knew exactly where the carpenter ants were because he listened to them with his stethoscope. The dude was spot on in his assessment.

In all my near 30 years of roofing we saw a lot of carpenter ants and they were ALWAYS around wet wood....some sort of leak in a roof or around a window. I have read that moisture isn't a requirement but in my personal experience I never saw otherwise.

Re: What is this on basement wall edge

I would highly recommend calling an exterminator as soon as possible. I tend to agree that it looks like carpenter ant damage. On my deck i have a 6x6 post supporting a doubled 2x10 beam that holds a corner of my roof. That beam was capped with aluminum. One day tje capping appeared loose. I removed it and found that literally 1/2 of that beam was eaten by carpenter ants. I jacked it up and replaced it with pressure treated lumber, but it was lots of work. Had i discovered it earlier and had it treated it never would have gotten that bad.

What is this on basement wall edge

I do remember seeing a couple of carpenter ants in the basement. They must have multiple plentifully this summer.
About two weeks ago I did go around the perimeter of the house and apply Ortho home defense granules and the liquid (with the wand).
I also used the liquid inside the basement as well only in the exposed concrete wall and floors. I was a bit late applying this summer. Otherwise last few years I did not see this.
I do see crickets in our basement right around this time of the year. I have not been able to successfully battle that yet but I think I found the source - sump pump pit.

Before I go about calling an x terminator if there any other applications I can put down myself to tackle this please do let me know. Thanks.

Re: What is this on basement wall edge

After the spraying I would vacuum up the dirt and see if it returns.

Re: What is this on basement wall edge

I will keep watch on it. I thought it was termites at first. But it sounds like carpenter ants are just as destructive.

My inderstanding isvthat termites eat the wood while carpenter ants excavate it but dont eat it. Either way, they destroy the wood.
