Shade Sails

I am planing to install shade sails in my backyard. I am putting 4x6 post 3/12 to 4 feet into the ground. Would i have to pore concrete into the footings or can i just fill footing with dirt ?

Re: Shade Sails

concrete fills the hole to undisturbed soil around it, Hard to match that by compacting soil.

Re: Shade Sails

As Neal said putting concrete is certainly the best option. Depending on your soil type however you make it away with just compacting the dirt around it. Not the best option but possible if you have soils that will compact enough. Another option is the expanding foam that's available for filling post holes. I've never used it myself but from what I've read it's almost as good as concrete and certainly much easier although more expensive.

Re: Shade Sails

The sail is not that big. 16x16 people have been telling me 4x4 post would not be strong enough. So i was going to go with 4x6.

Re: Shade Sails

How is the sail's anchor ropes going to be anchored to these 4 x 6's ? Are the 4 x 6" going to be flush with the ground or sticking up how much out of the ground ?
