Screw Down Shingles

You absolutely can use screws in singles. They hold better, they seldom go through the single as nails and staples often do. I used sheet rock screws and home made rubber washers, they have held for years.

Re: Screw Down Shingles

That is totally ridiculous. Sheet rock screws will rust away.

Homemade rubber washers eh?

I knew I was forgetting something. Hope all those houses don't leak.

Re: Screw Down Shingles

That's a lot of extra work to make the washers and screw the shingle when a couple hits an already proven technology exists. Not to mention the cost difference between screws and nails.

Probably won't be an issue. Drywall screws are brittle to start with and the odds are they will also have some rust damage - I'd expect them to snap off even with the sheathing will little effort.

Just someone wanting to start something. I have a friend like that. Calm seas. Then he stirs it up.

I've done some of that on a RV forum when some of them get too full of themselves.

Re: Screw Down Shingles

Yup, you can use screws on shingles. You can also test an electrical outlet with a steak knife.

Re: Screw Down Shingles

Don't laugh, but a few years ago, a client asked us to replace the shingles on his wrap around porch. Simple, low pitch and nobody died.

We started the tear off and there was not a single nail in the majority of the shingles. One row, then skipped 4 rows, then 4 more. We pulled the shingles off in sheets stuck with only the glue tabs. I have no idea how it stayed in place over the years.
